Synopsis: Matthew, still protesting his innocence, returns home after serving a fifteen year prison sentence for allegedly killing his mother. A cupboard full of family skeletons is opened in this suspenseful play of amateur sleuthing in an attempt to discover the truth.

The Cast

 
Stan Emery Richard Owen – Stan Emery
Stan began his long acting career in London in the late 1950s with the likes of Derek Griffiths and Bernard Cuffling and he has been active ever since. Stan was a regular face on Basingstoke’s Haymarket stage before appearing with MDS. He has been with us for many years.


Sarah Clark Celia Owen – Sarah Clark
Sarah moved from London in 93 intent on finding a village somewhere with a thriving Drama Society. MDS provided an answer. Malvern Girls College sparked Sarah’s love of the craft where as a 6th former she became head of drama. She has been in several recent productions including ‘Farndale...’ where her handbag almost topped the bill!

Mari Fleming Emma Doubleday – Mari Fleming
First appeared on stage at age four as a fairy doll for a ballet school. She has been a regular for MDS for a number of years and in numerous roles. Mari enjoys playing the more unusual character parts and over the years has appeared in such roles for MDS as Elvira in ‘Blythe Spirit’ and Angie in ‘Abigail’s Party’.

Cathy Bowman Cathy Bowman – Gilda Doubleday
This play will be Cathy’s 31st for MDS. She joined in May 1990 playing ‘Mavis Turner’ the tap teacher in ‘Stepping Out’. She has also appeared behind the scenes operating the lighting, sound and as Stage Manager. At Christmas, when not treading the boards in Mortimer, Cathy can be found in Aldermaston playing the Virgin Mary.

Mary Challenor Mary Challenor – Lavinia Doubleday
Developed a love of the theatre at the age of four after seeing a Pantomime at the London Palladium. Her first role with MDS was props, progressing to prompt. Mary has been in numerous productions; from ‘Barefoot In The Park’ to ‘Daisy Pulls it Off’. She is returning to the stage in ‘Take Away The Lady’. During her break from acting Mary has enjoyed many hours in the lighting box and directing.

Graham Jerome Graham Jerome – Matthew Doubleday
A regular on stage since primary school, Graham joined MDS following a period as a drama reviewer for the Reading Chronicle. He joined Reading Theatre Workshop in 1971 and played ‘Fagin’ in the first amateur show at the Hexagon in January 1978. He directed our recent ‘Educating Rita’ and was in both ‘Quartet’ and ‘Local Affairs’.

James McInnes James McInnes – Charles Doubleday
After studying at RADA James McInnes spent a number of years in the professional theatre as an actor and director. He also worked in radio and television before deciding to teach English and Drama. He subsequently set up and ran a television service for a large eduction authority. Since retiring he works as a freelance video producer and scriptwriter.
Tom Shorrock Tom Shorrock – Director
Tom became interested in theatre at school and continued to act with the youth section of the Preston Drama Group until 1973. Tom reappeared on stage with MDS in 1999. Since then he has appeared in eleven productions. As well as appearing on stage he has recently extended his experience by directing productions; firstly ‘Spring and Port Wine’ and now ‘Take Away The Lady’.
He says “There is always something to do and something to be involved with MDS. From, literally sweeping the stage through to learning lines, acting and singing (“I don’t do dancing” !!). The social side of the society can keep me busy too and I have made some very great friends at MDS. It really is a great way of becoming part of the village.”
