Programme
‘Supper Theatre has become a
very popular form of entertainment in the last few years. It has
enabled dramatic societies to vary their annual programme of plays
to include, from time to time, something with a musical content.
‘My aim, this time, will be to
provide a compilation of lighthearted, easy listening for you, to
sit back, relax and, I hope, enjoy with us. Many of your old favourite
songs are included, but a few newer, not so well known numbers have
been slipped in to link the whimsical content together. This is
an ensemble piece, each player assuming a different character to
perform the short sketches. solos and duets.
‘We are putting it together, bit by bit, piece by piece, note
by note’

Judy Winter, Tom Shorrock, Shelley Worboys, Chris Boott and Mandi
Grimwade caught trying to leave an early rehearsal! Those below are
wanted for escaping early...
|
 |
Mari Fleming
First appeared on stage at age four as a fairy doll for a ballet school.
She has been a regular for MDS for a number of years and in numerous
roles. Mari enjoys playing the more unusual character parts and over
the years has appeared in such roles for MDS as Elvira in ‘Blythe
Spirit’ and Angie in ‘Abigail’s
Party’.

 |
Catherine Bowman
This play will be Cathy’s 31st for MDS. She joined in May 1990
playing ‘Mavis Turner’ the tap teacher in ‘Stepping
Out’. She has also appeared behind the scenes operating the
lighting, sound and as Stage Manager. At Christmas, when not treading
the boards in Mortimer, Cathy can be found in Aldermaston playing
the Virgin Mary. |

Tom Shorrock
Tom became interested in theatre at school and continued to act with
the youth section of the Preston Drama Group until 1973. Tom reappeared
on stage with MDS in 1999. Since then he has appeared in eleven productions.
As well as appearing on stage he has recently extended his experience
by directing productions; firstly ‘Spring
and Port Wine’ and now ‘Take
Away The Lady’.
He says “There is always something to do and something to be
involved with MDS. From, literally sweeping the stage through to learning
lines, acting and singing (“I don’t do dancing”
!!). The social side of the society can keep me busy too and I have
made some very great friends at MDS. It really is a great way of becoming
part of the village.” |
Mandi Grimwade
With a scrapbook that began with cuttings of performances at St.
John's Hall in 1953, Mandi has been a life long friend of the stage.
She joined MDS at 16 and was later to feature in productions by
Reading Operatic Society and Reading Music Maker. Apart from these
many appearances Mandi has been directing since 1972, clocking up
scores of credits in that time. Her most recent being ‘Quartet’
by Ronald Harwood.

Founded
in September 1950, Mortimer Dramatic Society staged its first production on the 12th-13th January
1951; "Painted Sparrows" by Guy Paxton & Edward V. Hoile. Tickets
were 1s/6d unreserved but half-a-crown and 3s/6d reserved (7.5p, 12.5p and 17.5p
in today's money)...but of course you get cushioned seats nowadays!
After three productions, Mortimer Dramatic Society was able to give £62
to charity, so obviously they were popular with local audiences right from the
start. High performance standards and community involvement are criteria in
which Mortimer Dramatic Society continues to take pride. In 1953 "Worms Eye View" was performed
in aid of Coronation funds. Village events have been regularly supported and
in 1977 Mortimer Dramatic Society portrayed Noah's Ark in the Silver Jubilee Procession.
Usually staging three performances each year Mortimer Dramatic Society
has about 40 members, roughly divided into thirds - actors, production crew
and administration. We have seven current Life Members; life membership is awarded
to members who have given consistent and exceptional service and support to
The Society for many years. Over the last 15 years six members have progressed
to become full Equity members performing in professional regional theatres and
the West End.
